Database Kernel Engineer, Cloud Bigtable & Spanner

About the Role

Google Hyderabad is seeking a seasoned Database Kernel Engineer to join the Cloud Bigtable & Spanner team. You will design, develop, test, and deploy core storage and replication components that power Google‑scale services used by billions worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect and implement high‑performance storage engines and replication protocols.
• Collaborate with product and site reliability teams to ensure availability, consistency, and low latency at global scale.
• Write production‑grade C++/Java code, conduct code reviews, and mentor junior engineers.
• Develop testing frameworks, performance benchmarks, and automated deployment pipelines.
• Investigate and resolve complex production incidents affecting Bigtable and Spanner services.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• 5+ years of software engineering experience building distributed systems or storage engines.
• Strong proficiency in C++ and Java, with deep understanding of memory management and concurrency.
• Hands‑on experience with Linux kernel, networking, and multi‑threaded programming.
• Solid foundation in algorithms, data structures, and performance optimization.
• Experience designing and operating cloud‑native services at scale.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to work in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.

Nice to Have

• Knowledge of Google Cloud Platform services, especially Bigtable and Spanner.
• Familiarity with Go or Rust programming languages.
• Contributions to open‑source storage projects.
• Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Computer Science or related field.
