Smart Working is seeking a Lead PHP/Symfony Engineer to own and evolve mission‑critical backend systems for global clients. This remote‑first position demands deep Symfony expertise, strong architectural instincts, and the ability to mentor a growing engineering team.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high‑performance backend services using PHP 8+ and Symfony 5/6.
- Own features end‑to‑end: from ticket grooming, technical design, implementation, automated testing, code review, to production deployment.
- Drive Test‑Driven Development practices and enforce clean code standards across the team.
- Collaborate with product owners, QA, and DevOps to deliver reliable, scalable solutions.
- Mentor junior engineers, conduct architecture workshops, and lead technical discussions.
- Implement CI/CD pipelines, Docker containers, and cloud infrastructure (AWS) for seamless releases.
- Optimize database schemas, write efficient Doctrine queries, and introduce caching strategies (Redis, Symfony Cache).
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 5+ years of professional PHP development experience, with at least 3 years focused on Symfony.
- Strong understanding of OOP, SOLID principles, and clean architecture.
- Proficiency with Doctrine ORM, RESTful API design, and relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL).
- Hands‑on experience with TDD/BDD, PHPUnit, and automated testing pipelines.
- Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes (optional), and AWS services (EC2, RDS, S3, IAM).
- Excellent problem‑solving skills, code review etiquette, and ability to communicate complex ideas clearly.
Nice to Have
- Experience with micro‑service architectures and event‑driven design (Symfony Messenger, RabbitMQ).
- Knowledge of GraphQL, API Platform, or other modern API frameworks.
