About the Role
Chegg’s engineering team builds high‑impact, student‑facing web experiences. As a Software Engineer II (Frontend) you will own the design, implementation, testing, and production monitoring of features built with React and Next.js, backed by a GraphQL data layer. You will also collaborate with product, design, and backend engineers to deliver AI‑powered study tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop reusable React components and Next.js pages that meet performance and accessibility standards.
- Define GraphQL queries, mutations, and schema boundaries; integrate them with client‑state management (React Query, Redux Toolkit).
- Write unit and integration tests using Jest and React Testing Library; ensure high code coverage.
- Participate in code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and mentor junior engineers.
- Debug cross‑system UI issues, including GraphQL supergraph errors and authentication edge cases.
- Collaborate with backend teams on AWS services (Lambda, API Gateway, S3) when full‑stack tasks arise.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 2‑5 years of professional experience building web applications with React and Next.js.
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript and modern JavaScript (ES6+).
- Hands‑on experience with GraphQL (Apollo Client or similar) and client‑side state management.
- Familiarity with REST APIs, authentication flows, and basic AWS services.
- Solid understanding of responsive design, web performance optimization, and accessibility.
- Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile development practices.
Nice to Have
- Experience with AI/ML integrations or building study‑assistant features.
- Knowledge of server‑side rendering nuances in Next.js.
- Exposure to Docker or Kubernetes for local development.
