Smart Working is seeking a seasoned Senior PHP Backend Engineer to own and evolve large‑scale production systems that ingest GPS, telematics, video and event data. You will work remotely with a tight, senior engineering team, driving modernization of legacy services while ensuring security, GDPR compliance, and high availability for public‑sector clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high‑performance PHP services handling millions of device events daily.
- Refactor legacy codebases with limited documentation into clean, testable Laravel modules.
- Implement robust authentication, encryption, and data‑retention policies to meet GDPR and public‑sector standards.
- Collaborate with the computer‑vision team to expose video analytics via secure APIs.
- Lead performance tuning, caching strategies (Redis, opcache) and database optimization.
- Set up CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration (Docker/Kubernetes) and automated monitoring.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 5+ years of professional PHP development, with deep expertise in Laravel or Symfony.
- Strong understanding of relational databases (MySQL/MariaDB) and query optimization.
- Experience building RESTful APIs, handling high‑throughput data streams, and implementing security best practices.
- Proficiency with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI).
- Solid grasp of caching mechanisms (Redis, Memcached) and performance profiling.
