Senior Data Scientist, Search Ranking & Intent Understanding

About the Role

Google's Hyderabad engineering hub is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to lead the development of next‑generation search ranking algorithms and intent understanding models. You will work on problems that affect billions of users worldwide, collaborating with engineers, product managers, and researchers.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, prototype, and productionize machine‑learning models that improve search relevance and user intent detection.
• Analyze massive click‑stream and query logs to uncover insights and drive data‑driven product decisions.
• Develop scalable data pipelines using Apache Beam, BigQuery, and Cloud Dataflow.
• Lead A/B testing frameworks to evaluate model impact on core search metrics.
• Mentor junior data scientists and contribute to the team's technical roadmap.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Ph.D. or Master’s in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or related field.
• 5+ years of experience building large‑scale ML systems, preferably in search or recommendation domains.
• Strong expertise in statistical modeling, ranking algorithms, and natural language understanding.
• Proficiency in Python and ML libraries such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
• Hands‑on experience with distributed data processing (e.g., Apache Beam, Spark) and SQL/BigQuery.
• Demonstrated ability to translate research into production‑ready code at Google scale.

Nice to Have

• Experience with deep learning for query understanding (BERT, Transformer models).
• Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform services.
• Publications in top conferences (SIGIR, WWW, KDD).
