Staff Systems Engineer, Distributed Database & Spanner

About the Role

Google's Bengaluru engineering hub is seeking a Staff Systems Engineer focused on Distributed Database technologies and Google Spanner. You will design, develop, test, and operate high‑performance, globally‑distributed storage systems that power billions of daily user interactions across Google services.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect and implement core components of Google Spanner and related distributed database services.
• Drive performance optimization, scalability, and reliability for petabyte‑scale workloads.
• Collaborate with product, site reliability, and security teams to deliver end‑to‑end solutions.
• Mentor senior engineers and contribute to technical strategy and best practices.
• Participate in code reviews, testing frameworks, and production incident response.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• 7+ years of software engineering experience in large‑scale distributed systems.
• Strong proficiency in C++, Java, or Go.
• Deep understanding of consensus algorithms, replication, sharding, and consistency models.
• Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and container orchestration.
• Proven ability to design, build, and operate high‑throughput, low‑latency services.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Google Spanner, CockroachDB, or similar NewSQL databases.
• Knowledge of networking, storage internals, and hardware acceleration.
• Contributions to open‑source projects or publications in distributed systems.
